photo from pokernews.comOlivier Busquet and JC Alvardo agreed to a MMA fight in September 2015. Alvardo, who has been training Jiu-jitsu on and off since 2011, put up $150,000 while Busquet, the larger of the who but with no formal martial arts training, risked $120,000.

On Thursday, April 21 2016, after about six months of training following the MMA fight announement on Twitter, the fight was on at the Syndicate MMA facility in Las Vegas. Busquet (187.5 pounds) defeated Alvardo (165 pounds) after three 2-minute rounds of brutal fighting. According to Card Player, medical staff was brought in to examine Alvardo's face, which was soaked in blood with his left eye very swollen, prior to the 4th round. His side eventually deiceded to call it quits. Busquet was awarded the victory by technical knockout.

The journey itself was just about testing myself," Busquet told Card Player following the victory. "Finding out what I was made of and if I could handle something like this. I owe everything to the people who helped me, especially [coach] Tito Hartz and everybody at ECU(East Coast United BJJ and MMA)... I would have just gotten my ass kicked without them."

"I have so much respect for JC. He is so tough. If the situation was reversed I might have given up way before he did," Busquet added. "I came in bigger and stronger, and he knew I would be and he still went through with it and still lasted three rounds. On the bottom most of the time, taking tough shots. I just have a lot of respect for him. I'm so relieved and thrilled. I can't believe it's over and that it ended like this."

Of course nobody with a sane mind would have mention him that 22 pounds weight difference will matter, right? Just plain silly expecting that you could come out on top just beacuse you learned jiu-jitsu for five years. Just silly.

This is really a very bad idea from the MMA to accept a fight with a fighter 22 pounds over the other one and the poor guy did not want to cancel the fight i suppose being afraid of the MMA who wanted this fight to go on.

I just don't like this sport because the promotors are doing everything they want and don't care about the fighters.

Most of these guys are going out of this sport in very bad conditions physically and mentally. Aww crap! Aww crap!

To be honest that is almost the case with every other sport with a heavy physical side especially when the participants doing it professionally. Everything like this is taken its toll on the body.

Yeah I watched the fight yesterday. Decent fight considering they're not professionnals. The guy who lost showed great heart and determination.

They had a bet of over 100k on it, and they had been preparing since last october I believe. I feel like Olivier Busquet made a cycle or 2 of steroids for the fight though. But maybe they said there was no rules for the bet... who knows. They can do whatever they want. It's not like there's an athletic commission for gamblers fights Blink

Steroid won't put muscles magically onto his body because that is not how its works, he obviously did the hard part too - but kinda interesting why would you participate in a bet where there are no rules...

No need to explain how steroids work... I know. I've been following MMA for over 10 years.

No rules as in no weightclass and no PEDS. Because they would have no way to verify that (tests are VERY expensive).

Obviously they respected regular MMA rules like no groin shots, no headbutts, no kicks/knees to the head to a downed opponent ect. But Clearly Olivier did some roids and creatine and such. You just don't get bulk like that in a couple of months without some help. But I have no doubt did he did train a lot, he had good cardio.
