The poker world lost an icon yesterday as five-time World Series of Poker Champion "Amarillo Slim" Preston passed away just after midnight at a hospice near his home in Amarillo, Texas.

His family was by his side from the day he was hospitalized till the very end. Preston's daughter confirmed the poker legend's death by releasing a statement regarding her father's passing:

"We hope everyone will remember our beloved Amarillo Slim for all the positive things he did for poker and to popularize his favorite game - Texas Hold'em."

Doyle Brunson, who used to tour America in the old days together with Amarillo Slim to find poker games, twittered the following about his good old friend.

The bad news have now been confirmed. If he was suffering, maybe it’s better this way. I am sure these have been 83 years lived in a very intensive way. His named will be forever recorded in the history of poker, if not for any other reason, at least for being five times WSOP champion, what a record.

WAas just reading about Amarillo Slim and seen he passed "God Bless His Soul" and he was inducted in the Poker Hall of Fame back in 1992. We'll miss him, but hopefully we'll get to hear stories about some of the times he had playuing poker. It's sad, but we have that day and that's why we should cherish the people we meet and respect the small things like opinions without taking everything so serious.

RIP. Playing on the road and trying to find poker games, risking getting beaten up, robbed or killed, while we sit in the safety of our home in a comfy chair with the laptop going playing internet poker - worlds apart! It actually makes me feel like playing live again, where you feel that if ever you put a really sick beat on some of these guys they would be waiting for you at the end of the night....
